Social Security benefits are scheduled to rise by 3.6% in 2027, following an October 14, 2026, announcement from the Social Security Administration (SSA). The adjustment is the largest increase in benefits since 2023 and is expected to affect roughly 76 million people who receive Social Security or Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

For households building a retirement budget, the increase may provide helpful additional income. At Eden Financial, we encourage clients to look beyond the headline percentage and consider how the change fits alongside Medicare costs, taxes, spending needs, and their broader retirement planning strategy.

What Will the 3.6% Social Security Increase Mean?

Beginning in January 2027, Social Security beneficiaries will receive a 3.6% increase in their monthly payments. This is higher than the 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment that applied in 2026.

The SSA estimates that the average retired worker’s monthly benefit will increase by about $75, rising from $2,095 to $2,170. Over a full year, that works out to approximately $900 in additional benefits. SSI recipients will also receive the 3.6% increase, with revised payments beginning on December 31, 2026.

The purpose of the adjustment is to help benefits retain purchasing power as living expenses rise. Still, the specific dollar increase will depend on the benefit amount each recipient currently receives.

How the SSA Calculates a Cost-of-Living Adjustment

The SSA bases its annual cost-of-living adjustment, commonly called a COLA, on changes in the cost of everyday goods and services. This includes expenses such as food, transportation, and housing.

To make that determination, the agency uses the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers, or CPI-W. It compares inflation data from July through September with the data from the same three-month period in the prior year.

For 2027, that calculation produced a 3.6% increase. While the adjustment is intended to help Social Security keep pace with inflation, it may not completely offset higher costs, particularly for healthcare and other essential needs.

Other Social Security Updates for 2027

The COLA is not the only Social Security change taking effect in 2027. The SSA also announced updates that may matter for people who are still employed, nearing retirement, or receiving benefits while working.

The maximum annual earnings subject to Social Security taxes will increase from $184,500 to $192,300 in 2027. This change affects income above the prior taxable wage base.

The earnings limit also applies to people collecting Social Security retirement or survivor benefits before they reach full retirement age. If you will remain below full retirement age throughout 2027, the limit will be $25,560. For someone who reaches full retirement age during 2027, the limit will be $67,920 for earnings received before the month they reach that age. There is no earnings limit once full retirement age is reached.

Why Medicare Costs Can Change Your Net Benefit

A higher Social Security payment does not always mean the full increase reaches your bank account. For many beneficiaries, Medicare Part B premiums are deducted directly from their monthly Social Security payment.

If Medicare premiums rise in 2027, they may reduce part of the additional amount created by the COLA. That is why it is important to consider your net monthly income rather than focusing only on the gross benefit increase.

Reviewing your updated benefit statement alongside your Medicare expenses can help you understand the actual change to your cash flow. This can be especially useful when organizing a retirement budget and determining whether other parts of your financial plan need attention.

Steps to Take as You Prepare for 2027

A Social Security adjustment is a practical reason to revisit your retirement income plan. Consider the following steps as the new benefit amounts become available:

Confirm your updated payment amount. Once the new information is released, review your personalized COLA notice and benefit details through your my Social Security account.
Update your retirement budget. Look at the increase in the context of Medicare premiums, taxes, and other household expenses. A modest benefit increase may have a different impact depending on your overall spending plan.
Reassess your claiming and retirement strategy. If you are approaching retirement or have not yet filed for benefits, consider how Social Security fits into your larger financial picture, including your savings and other income sources.
